Energy Efficiency Project for Educational Facility
Location: U.S. University Campus | Duration: 14 Months
Challenge
A leading university’s College of Engineering sought to integrate real-world innovation into its senior Capstone Engineering Project. The goal: evaluate the performance and measurable impact of advanced energy optimization technology in a live campus environment.
The selected facility — a 155,000-square-foot Athletic Center featuring two gyms, a swimming pool, and offices — was known for its heavy and variable electrical demand, presenting an ideal test site for performance analysis.
Solution
ENV Technologies partnered with the university to provide hands-on training and equipment for a student-led, data-driven installation.
Over a 14-month period, students installed 11 Energy Optimization devices across the Athletic Center’s electrical systems and selected comparable “control” buildings on campus to benchmark performance.
The project included structured data collection at 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12-month intervals, allowing for consistent measurement and academic validation.
Results (31 Days Before vs. 28 Days After Implementation)
After one year, the data revealed significant improvements in energy performance:
- 12.5% reduction in overall kWh consumption
- 10% increase in electrical efficiency and cost savings
- No operational disruption during installation or testing
- Enhanced understanding of applied energy optimization for engineering students
Broader Impact
- Educational Collaboration: Enabled real-world learning opportunities for engineering students through applied research.
- Sustainability Leadership: Reinforced the university’s commitment to innovation and carbon reduction goals.
- Operational Benefits: Lowered utility costs and improved energy performance in a high-demand facility.
The Outcome
The university achieved a 12.5% reduction in energy consumption and a measurable 10% improvement in efficiency, all while supporting an educational initiative that bridged technology, academia, and sustainability.
Through this project, ENV Technologies demonstrated not only the practical impact of its solutions but also its value as a partner in innovation and education.
